Barbados

Ten reasons for visiting Barbados:

Hospitality

Barbadians are incredibly friendly and welcome visitors with a smile. Barbados is a safe Island and visitors can relax knowing that if they get lost or need help, a wide smile and helpful advice can be guaranteed. The wonderful Island of Barbados is recognised around the world for the welcome and friendliness of the locals as well as stunning natural beauty and rich culture & history and we hope to provide you with as full and rewarding Caribbean experience.

Beaches

Barbados offers one of the most exceptional Caribbean escapes. White powdery sand beaches lined with beautiful towering palms and stunning reefs can be found along the pristine Caribbean coast. The locals know how lucky they are and love to spend time on these long stretches of beaches just as much as the visitors. The west and south coast's beaches are calm, since they face the Caribbean Sea. This coast is where the majority of visitors head for. On the eastern shores however, the wild Atlantic sends waves crashing into this exposed coastline. Not suitable for relaxing on but worth a visit for the stunning scenery alone.

Accommodation

All Almond Resorts are situated along the famous Gold Coast, on the west coast of the Island.   Award winning Almond Resorts welcomes back guests year after year with their excellent service in luxurious settings and they play an important role in Green issues in protecting and enhancing the environment for the residents of Barbados as well as their guests in their commitment to the local and regional community. Almond Resorts Environmental & Social Sustainability Policy is available on request.

Food

The Bajan food is a reflection of the wide variety of historical visitors welcomed to their beautiful Island. A fascinating blend of Polynesian, French, Greek, Chinese, Italian, Japanese make up fantastic and mouth watering combinations. Also if you are a seafood lover – you will be in heaven! Barbados is sometimes called the "Land of the Flying Fish" and this curiously yet spectacularly shaped fish still forms a large and very enjoyable part of the islanders' diet. Enjoy steamed, fried or baked in numerous recipes and if this takes your fancy, you won't be looking very far for this dish and you will certainly see this dish served in all of the Almond Resorts!

Talking of seafood – a MUST visit whilst holidaying in Barbados is Oistins Fish Fry every Friday & Saturday night. Located in the parish of Christ Church, close to Bridgetown, this fishing community pays homage to the fruits of the sea. Hundreds of locals flock to Oistins for an opportunity to enjoy the best seafood, the sounds of Island music and wonderful local hospitality. Visitors are welcomed with a big smile and usually a beer or a glass of rum! Be prepared for dancing, eating, laughing and just lots of fun!

Festivals

Barbadians need no excuse to celebrate! All year there is almost always a festival to be enjoyed with the most celebrated festival being Crop-Over which celebrates the end of the sugar cane harvest. The festival three weeks and is a true carnival atmosphere with parades, dancing and music.  Visitors flock to the Island for Crop-Over so ensure you book early to visit during this time.

Weather

Of course the weather has to feature in the top ten list!  Barbados is out of the Caribbean hurricane path and enjoys year round sunshine with average daytime temperatures ranging between 28 to 30 degrees Centigrade. (75 – 85F)
The most easterly of the Caribbean islands, the trade winds gusting off the Atlantic provide a constant gentle breeze making for more comfortable conditions even on the hottest days.

Nightlife

As mentioned – the locals need no excuse to party and celebrate with friends, family and all visitors to their Island. Barbados offers a variety of entertainment in and out of hotels. From peaceful romantic dinners and exquisite dining for two to nightclubs and lively beach parties.
Barbadians truly love their music too and happily share it with the world. Enjoy Soca, Reggae, Calypso and steel pan bands. It's all about the rhythm!

Direct Flights

Fly direct to Barbados from Gatwick or Manchester. Grantley Adams International Airport welcomes non-stop and direct flights from the UK in little over 8 hours. Just 8 miles from the capital Bridgetown, the airport had an extensive makeover in time for the 2007 cricket World Cup.

Activities

If the vast array of activities at Almond Resorts isn't enough – you will find a huge variety of daily and nightly activities to enjoy.  The helpful concierge desk at Almond Resorts will assist you in booking several of these. Traditional sporting events such as horse racing, polo and of course cricket are favourites on Barbados. For the adrenaline junkies, you can join in on wind surfing and sail boarding on the choppy east coast or perhaps horse riding on the beach and in the sea. For a more gentle Caribbean experience, swimming with the turtles is a must for all! Not forgetting of course the Mount Gay Rum Tour at the world's oldest rum distillery and enjoy the tasting sessions hic!

History

Barbados has a long and varied history.  Having been ruled by the British for more than 350 years, the island obviously has many British influences and this is reflected in the culture, traditions, food and more. Colonial rule ended in 1966 and the country has flourished as an independent nation ever since.  Amazingly the country has the oldest surviving parliament in the Western Hemisphere – going back more than 375 year!  There are many other historical monuments resulting from Barbados's history as a sugar producer, such as Great Houses and mills – tours are available should you be interested.
